"Ambient temperature was 0.9°C to 6.3°C within 3 cm of the clusters and –1.1°C to 3.7°C 1m outside the cage, the difference amounting to 0.6–3.1°C. For comparison, the temperature difference between the outermost air space inside the hive and the air temperature outside the hive amounted to 3.6–6.1°C with the Plexiglas side walls of the cage closed. In standard colonies, it amounts to approximately 8–9°C (H. Kovac, personal communication)."
